The Edinburgh University Music Society prides itself in its involvement with potential and budding young musicians and has for many years taken part in activities across Edinburgh (and indeed the rest of Scotland) promoting music and letting the pupils learn a bit about our classical ensembles too.

“I didn’t really think about classical music in films like Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter. Now I think I will listen harder to films. I especially like the trombones!”

Most recently we ran a series of hour-long education projects for primary schools years P6 and P7, performing some classical pieces alongside a number of more contemporary arrangements (Wallace and Gromit and Lady Gaga may have featured!). The project is structured like a performance, with our cheerful presenters guiding the audience through the various sections of the Orchestra and Chorus, highlighting each with a suitable piece of music. Overhead slides in the background reinforce the presenter’s points, and every now and then the audience get involved (often with brilliant, if amusing, results).

Alongside our highly successful Free In For Your School scheme which ran several years ago, other projects have included scratch performances and visits to schools by some of our musicians for a group masterclass.

If you are interested in finding out more or in getting your school involved, then contact our Community Relations Manager at community@eums.org.uk and we will be more than happy to discuss any opportunities further with you.
